Home Remedies for Sun Burns - Treat Sunburn at Home

Sunburn is a burn to the skin produced by overexposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.

The symptoms of sunburn are: Red skin that is painful and hot to touch, mild dizziness and tiredness. The skin damage is often permanent and can have serious long-term health effects, including skin cancer.

Boil lettuce leaves for ten minutes, strain off and chill the water (cool, not cold) and apply it to burned skin. Some dermatologists also recommend this.

ALOE VERA is a natural and soothing treatment option for sunburn and tan. Just pluck a few leaves of the plant, mash them and mix with lemon juice. Apply all over the affected areas. It cleanses, clears and nourishes the skin.

Mix 2 teaspoon tomato juice and 4 tablespoon buttermilk and apply on the face. Leave for 1/2 hour, and wash off.

To create a green tea for sunburn compress, make an infusion by pouring boiling water over loose-leaf Green Sencha tea leaves and allow the mixture to sit for 15-20 minutes. Once that the infusion has cooled, strain the leaves and retain the liquid. Soak a clean cloth in the liquid, and then place on the sunburned area for 5-10 minutes. This may be done several times a day.

Prepare a Sunburn Soother by mixing 1 cup white wine vinegar, 5 tablespoons salt, 5 tablespoons plain yogurt and 2 tablespoons aloe gel. Combine all the ingredients and stir briskly until smooth and creamy. Store in a refrigerator. Shake well before use. Apply it on the affected areas every hour or so, until the burning sensation is gone.

Mix glam flour in curd and apply on face. Wash off after 30 minutes. Do it daily till your sunburn is gone.

Another home remedy for sunburn is to add water to powdered slippery elm to make a paste-like substance, and then to apply the paste on the sunburned areas. Slippery elm acts as healing agent, and also draws out toxins from the wounds.

Mix together 150ml (1 pint) of plain yoghurt and 2 tablespoons of rosewater (elderflower water can be substituted for the rose water.) Apply where it hurts to soothe and cool. The application of this delicious mixture can be made into a terrific game to turn a cantankerous child's thoughts from misery to laughter. Rose water and glycerin, 4 tablespoons of each, is one of the best moisturizers for children's skin but it is not as healing as yoghurt. This will completely remove sunburn.

Comfrey root is an herb that helps to soothe burns. Place one tablespoon of comfrey in one cup of water and bring it to a boil. After it simmers a few minutes, let it cool. Saturate a cloth with the strained liquid and apply to the burned area.

Mix one egg white with one tsp honey and hazel. Apply this on the bruised area and leave it for 5-10 minutes. Later wash it with luke warm water.

For treating a sunburn which is relatively mild, add ten drops of chamomile oil and ten drops of lavender oil to a cool bath and soak yourself in it for half an hour or more. This will moisten your skin and lessen the skin discomfort.
